Danish Renewables divests shares in the largest wind farm in South Africa
Danish Renewables has divested its shares in the Overberg Wind farm; a project developed with the joint forces of both South African and international developers. The purchaser of the project is the South African leading independent renewable energy producer, Red Rocket South Africa Ltd.
The Overberg Windfarm in Western Cape will be the biggest wind farm in South Africa with a capacity of 400 MW, consisting of 63 Goldwind turbines. The project has now entered the construction phase and is expected to be operational by early 2027.
Once completed, the groundbreaking 400 MW facility will become the second largest on the African continent and one of the 15 largest in the world. Projects of this magnitude are unique, and this has required both perseverance and determination from the development group as well as ambition and vision from both Red Rocket and PPA partners Richard Bay Minerals and Discovery Green.
“With coal being the main source of electricity generation in South Africa and demand surpassing supply in the energy sector, we are proud to have been part of making the Overberg Wind farm possible in one of the countries where it matters most both for energy security and for the climate. We look forward to seeing the project in operation soon” – Esben Kumke Christensen, CEO and founder.
